The scholarship has been awarded annually since its inception in 1959 and has awarded over 35,000 scholarships and fellowships to individuals.

The scholarship awards more than 900 fully-funded scholarships and fellowships for postgraduate study and professional development to Commonwealth citizens yearly.

The commonwealth scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, visa and travels, feeding allowance, and other allowances.

Commonwealth Scholarship Requirements 

For one to apply for the Commonwealth Scholarship, they must:

  • One must be a citizen or permanent resident of a Commonwealth country.
  • One will still be eligible if they are refugees or British-protected persons.
  • At least one will also need to have an undergraduate honors degree of upper second class (2:1).
  • For Ph.D., you will need an appropriate master’s degree.
  • Lastly, one must be unable to afford to study in the UK without a scholarship.

How to get Commonwealth Scholarship

To apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must first be a citizen or permanent resident of a Commonwealth country.

You will still be eligible to apply for the commonwealth scholarship if you are a refugee or British-protected person.

What Commonwealth Scholarships Covers 

The common wealth scholarships offer numerous benefits to students who are awarded the scholarship. Some of the notable ones are as mentioned below.

Most commonwealth scholarships are fully funded scholarships, which means that they will cover your tuition fees; you will also receive your airfare to and from the UK and a living allowance to support your stay in the UK.

  • Approved tuition and examination fees.
  • Stipend (i.e., living allowance), which is at the rate of £ 1,000 per month. Also, a Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing for a thesis or dissertation, and Warm clothing allowance, wherever applicable.
  • A Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the United Kingdom or abroad
  • For Ph.D. Scholars, fieldwork grant towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (usually the cost of one economy class return airfare to scholar fieldwork location).
  • For Ph.D. Scholars paid mid-term visits (airfare) to their home country (unless they have claimed (or intend to claim) spouse or child allowances during their scholarship or have received a return airfare to their home country for fieldwork).

If the scholarship is 18 months long at least, the following family allowances are applicable:

  • Spouse allowance of about £225 per month if the scholar and their spouse live together in the UK at the same address.
  • Child allowance of about £225 per month for the first child, and about £110 per month for the second and the third child under the age of 16, if the scholar is accompanied by their spouse and children and they are living with them at the same address in the UK.
  • If the scholar is widowed, divorced, or a single parent (irrespective of the length of the scholarship), child allowance of about £450 per month for the first child, and about £110 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if a scholar is accompanied by their children and they are living with them at the same address in the UK.
