International students can apply for the Humboldt Research Fellowships 2022-2023. These scholarships are fully funded. These scholarships are not available for post-doctoral studies. The fellowship provides a monthly fellowship for 3,150 EUR and financial support for family members and personal items.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation allows highly qualified scientists and scholars from overseas to spend extended periods (6-24 months) of research in Germany.

  • Postdoctoral researchers who have completed their doctorate within the past four years are eligible for a monthly fellowship of 2,670 EUR. Monthly fellowship of 3150 EUR to postdoctoral scholars (doctorate completed in the last 12 years).
  • Flexible start date, and for experienced researchers, the possibility of splitting the fellowship into up to three stays.
  • Mentoring for individuals during sponsorship periods.
  • Before the fellowship, fellows and their marital partners offer an intensive German language course.

Eligibility Criteria to Apply for Humboldt Research Fellowship

To be eligible to receive the Humboldt Research Fellowship, applicants must fulfill these criteria:

  • Language Required: English, German
  • All world countries are eligible.
  • Doctorate or equivalent academic degree (Ph.D. or CSC), not more than four years.
  • Academic publications are reviewed by international standards and published in journals or publishing houses.
  • Confirmation of availability of research facilities, mentoring agreement, and detailed expert statements by academic hosts at research institutions in Germany.
  • Expert reviews by a doctoral supervisor or another academic qualified to make well-founded comments about the applicant’s qualifications, including non-workers at the applicant’s institute.
  • Language skills are required for humanities, social sciences, medicine, and the arts: German; otherwise, a good understanding of English. Natural sciences and engineering require a good command of German or English.
  • The Humboldt Foundation assumes candidates will adhere to the Rules for Good Scientific Practice and the legally-binding principles in scientific ethics during application and sponsorship periods.
