2022 TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowship will provide the recipient with the following advantages:

 2022 TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowship Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowships, the applicant must meet the requirements listed in the following sections:

  • Required Language: English.
  • The countries that are eligible for the program: All world countries (non-EU). 
  • cannot be studying, living, employed, or studying in South Africa in 2022;
  • applicants who previously worked or pursued an academic degree or conducted a study within South Africa, and have returned to their home country however, they have been in the home country longer than (2) years applicants are ineligible to apply; eligible to apply.
  • an MSc degree in the field of natural sciences is an added advantage.
  • You must have attained an average of 65 percent in the master’s degree in order to be eligible for funding for doctoral studies;
  • You must enroll at the South African public university in 2023 on a permanent basis and can be based in the institution of your choice. South African public research institutions comprising Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Science Councils, and National Research Facilities;
  • Must be at least 32 years old on the 31st of December of that year in which you apply;
  • The applicant must provide evidence of the assessment of any foreign qualification (obtained from universities outside South Africa) assessed through SAQA. South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) or evidence of the submission by applicant their qualifications to SAQA for assessment. In the event of not submitting proof, it is a cause for the application to be denied. 
  • must comply with the visa as well as immigration regulations of the country where the applicant is from as well as South Africa. The applicant is required to arrange for their own Visa and/or study permit through the study program in South Africa. Both NRF nor TWAS is accountable for helping to arrange visas. However, NRF will pay for the lowest return economy flight as well as the cost of a study permit or visa for doctoral candidates who are NRF-TWAS applicants.

  •    The candidate is to contact the appropriate institution to request acceptance and to find an advisor for the doctoral research
  • to submit the applicant with an English certification of proficiency in English (if there is one available when you submit your application). If this is not provided, it will be required prior to when any NRF funds can be disbursed to the student. The student must meet the conditions in the English Language Proficiency Academic test IELTS 6.5 (no band lower than 6.0) OR the TOEFL (paper) 575 (TWE 4.5) or TOEFL EBIT (min. 20) and Cambridge at least 58. The information on the IELTS tests can be obtained through the British Council in the applicant’s home country or via: www.ielts.org.  Candidates can consult with the British Council in their home country for help.
  • Present a complete research proposal that is acknowledged and approved at the institution of the host. submit a support letter from the supervisor of the host institution in question;
  • Make sure you have an academic transcript that is official on the letterhead of the university;
  • Be financially responsible for relatives who are in the same household.

Follow the instructions for submitting an application to the TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowships:

Stage 1:

Application to be accepted at South African Institutions

Candidates must make contact with institutions that are located in South Africa or potential supervisors for a chance to be placed within the training for doctoral students. 

  • Candidates must submit formal letters from the host’s South African institution, department, or laboratory as well as motivation from the institution or department that hosts the applicant. This is the responsibility of the candidate to contact the relevant institution to make an application for admission. Additionally, it is the responsibility of the student to locate an academic supervisor;
  • The research project has to be approved and registered by the institution hosting it (a letter of backing from the potential supervisor has to be included with the application).
  • Universities will establish their own internal cut-off times for applicants and applicants must stick to the dates.

Application to evaluate foreign qualifications offered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)

Candidates must have all qualifications from abroad (obtained from universities outside South Africa) assessed at SAQA. South African Qualification Authority (SAQA). Evidence that applicants have submitted their qualifications for evaluation by SAQA must be included along with the application, failing which the application is rejected.

Candidates are advised to begin this process as early as possible so that they have time to process it. Details on the process are available through www.saqa.org.za. On the SAQA website, go to Service the section titled Evaluation of Foreign Qualifications – General Information. The applicants must follow all instructions and submit all relevant documents in order to ensure that there are no delays or rejections of applications. The applicants are advised to send all documents required for application in advance to SAQA direct.

Be sure that you must submit the application following the completion.

The deadline to submit applications is the 08th of July in 2022. However, the universities will determine their own internal cut-off times for applications. Candidates have to adhere to these dates.

Applications will not be accepted beyond the time limit. Therefore, it is suggested to submit your application electronically as soon as you can.
