  • Notifications are considered a funding application but not an application to the Ph.D. program.
  • A field on the Ph.D. online application form is titled “Funding”. (To inform applicants that ‘I will fund my research through other methods’).
  • In the section ‘Please provide the details of any scholarship or grants you’re trying to apply for or have received, You should mention that (you are applying for a School of Law Herchel Smith award).

Important Notes :

  • The applicants should be aware that the School of Law, unlike other Ph.D. programs at QMUL does not have a formal requirement that applicants get in touch with any academic member to arrange for supervision. This must be discussed before submitting their application in full. Applications, at the initial instance, are reviewed by the Director of Research Admissions.
  • Suppose you wish to apply for Herchel Smith funding and have submitted your initial application (without notifying us that you would like to receive one of our grants). In that case, you need to get in touch with Ms. Gareth Skehan, Ph.D. Admissions Administrator, before the deadline via email at, and mention the award you would like to pursue. If you do not send this email, you won’t receive Herchel Smith funding.
  • The Director is in charge of the supervisory abilities and availability of all academic personnel within the School. Therefore, applications are reviewed regularly when they are deemed adequate by the Director or academics with expertise in research pertinent to the applicant’s subject of research.
  • However, the On-line application process requires applicants to verify the name of a prospective supervisor (in the “Research Proposal” section).
  • Because the School of Law has no requirements here, applicants can simply state their supervisor of choice as “School of Law supervisor’ without the need to identify the specific staff member (although they can choose to do this if they would like).
