The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship is a lottery-funded scholarship that rewards Florida high school graduates for their high academic achievement.

What is Florida Bright Futures Scholarship?

This Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program is a merit award program based on high school academic achievement.

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program rewards its students for their academic achievements during their high school by providing funding for the students to pursue post-secondary education and career goals in Florida.

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarships program is awarded by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) based on academic excellence.

The Florida bright futures scholarship was created in 1997 by the Florida Legislature.

There are three available award levels in the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship program:

  • The Florida Academic Scholars Award.
  • Florida Medallion Scholars Award.
  • And Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award.
  • The Florida Academic Scholars: this requires a minimum weighted GPA of 3.5, an ACT score of 29, or SAT combined reading/math score of 1290 (1330 as starting in 2021) and 100 volunteer service hours.
  • Florida Medallion Scholars: this requires a minimum weighted GPA of 3.0, an ACT score of 26 (25 starting in 2021) or SAT combined reading/math score of 1170 (1210 beginning in 2021) and 75 service hours.
  • The Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars: this requires a minimum weighted GPA of 3.0, available only to students pursuing a career education or certificate program.

This Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholars program funds up to 60 credit hours for a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science program following completion of the corresponding associate degree.

Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Requirements

Each award has different academic eligibility criteria and provides an additional award amount and the number of semester hours. Below are the general requirements that apply to the Bright Futures awards. To qualify for one of these awards, you must:

  • You Must Be a Florida state resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Must Complete the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) by 8/31, the year of your high school graduation.
  • Must Earn a standard Florida high school diploma or its equivalent from a Florida public high school or a registered Florida Department of Education private school
  • Must Not have been convicted for felony
  • Must be accepted and enroll in a degree or a certificate program at an eligible Florida public or independent post-secondary institution.
  • Must be enrolled for at least six (non-remedial) credit hours per term.

Specific Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Requirements

Below is the list of requirements for each of the Florida bright futures scholarship awards:

There are many conditions for the Bright Future Scholarships program, the minimum requirements for GPA, ACT / SAT, and hours of service for the three Bright Future Scholarships.

The Florida Academic Scholars Program (FAS) is the most competitive scholarship, followed by the Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS), and then lastly, the Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSV).

  • The Florida Academic Scholars

This requires a minimum weighted GPA of 3.5, an ACT score of 29, or SAT combined reading/math score of 1290 (1330 as starting in 2021), and 100 volunteer service hours.

Each of the bright futures scholarship programs has a different set of requirements, but there are some that they all share. Here are the requirements one must meet to qualify for any bright futures program. You must:

  • Must Be a Florida resident and a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen Regardless of where one’s parents live, they are qualified as long as they are Florida residents.
  • Must earn a diploma from a Florida high school or high school equivalent. One can earn this diploma from a public high school or a certified private high school.
  • Be enrolled, or enrolling, for six credit hours per semester at least.
  • Must Complete the Florida Financial Aid Application before August 31 of their graduation year.
  • Must enroll in a post-secondary program in the state of Florida.
  • Must not have been convicted for a felony.

The deadline to complete the 2022-2023 Florida Bright Futures scholarship requirements is August 31, 2022.
