The fully-funded Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship 2022-2023 for international students is available. This scholarship is available for master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral students. This scholarship offers a monthly payment, excluding tuition fees, medical insurance, airfare, and housing allowance.

The Federal Commission of Scholarships (FCS) sponsors the Swiss Scholarship in collaboration with the Swiss government. The Swiss Government Scholarship offers scholarships to over 180 countries. All nationalities are eligible. This scholarship is open to highly qualified postgraduate researchers in all academic fields and young doctors.

Post-graduate researchers in all disciplines (with a minimum of a master’s degree) can apply for the Research Scholarship. These scholarships are available for study or research at the doctoral level at any Swiss cantonal university, university of applied sciences, or the two federal institutes.

Types of Swiss Government

  • Post-graduates can use the research scholarship in any discipline with a minimum of a master’s degree and are coming to Switzerland to research or continue their studies at doctoral or postdoctoral levels.
  • Research scholarships can be awarded to students or researchers at Swiss cantonal universities, universities in applied sciences, the two federal technology institutes, and the four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor from one of these higher education institutions will be considered.
  • Scholarships for art students who wish to study in Switzerland are available.
  • Art scholarships can be awarded to students who want to study at any Swiss conservatory, university of the arts, or other institution that promotes art. Only a few countries are eligible for this scholarship.

Scholarship Coverage

The recipient of the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2021 will receive the following benefits:

  • The monthly payment for the scholarship is CHF 1,920.
  • Only for non-EU grants and non-EFTA grantees: The FCS pays compulsory Swiss health insurance.
  • There are no family allowances.
  • Non-EU and non-EFTA scholarship holders receive a lump sum for a return ticket to their country of origin. This is provided at the end of the scholarship.
  • Housing allowance of CHF 300 (payable once during the start of the scholarship).
  • Half-fare for public transportation cards for one year.
  • Support services are available for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship recipients, with various excursions, dinners, and sightseeing tours.

Eligibility Criteria to Apply for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

All the requirements listed below are required to be eligible for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships.

  • Language Required: English.
  • All world countries are eligible.
  • A master’s degree (or equivalent university degree) obtained before 31 July 2021 (degree certification) is recognized by the Swiss university. The degree must be presented to the Federal Commission for Scholarships as proof before starting the scholarship.
  • All applicants must have been born after 31/12/1985.
  • The scholarship is not open to applicants who have lived in Switzerland for more than one year before September’s start.
  • The academic host professor at the Swiss university must sign the letter. It should include a short CV and a statement confirming they will supervise the research. The application will be denied if an academic host professor does not support it.
  • The research proposal must include a time frame. This is the heart of the application. This is the most crucial application part and must be given all attention.
  • Candidates must have the ability to communicate in the required language for research/studies.
  • Candidates who have received a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship cannot apply for a second scholarship.
  • Scholarship recipients are expected to relocate to Switzerland during the grant period.

How do you apply for the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships?

Follow the instructions below to apply for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

(1) Create the following documents:

  1. Signed FCS Application Form (typed, printed)
  2. Complete CV with a list of academic publications and awards
  3. A motivation letter (max. two pages).
  4. A fully completed research proposal (max. A complete research proposal (max. Five pages), signed using only the FCS Research Proposal.
  5. A copy of the letter signed by an academic host professor at the selected Swiss university, confirming that they are available to supervise and support research.
  6. A brief CV of the academic mentor from the home institution.
  7. Two confidential letters of recommendation from different professors in the applicant’s field (only use the FCS reference form, originals in sealed envelopes for the first set). There are no copies of the second set.
  8. Photocopies of certificates and grade sheets from previously attended universities/colleges and diplomas with grades, starting with the most recent. French, Italian, German, or German with certified translations attested in English. Do not submit original certificates.
  9. Signed medical certification (use only the FCS Health Certificate form).
  10. Two copies of the applicant’s passport (main page with personal data) Double nationals should have copies of both keys. If you are already in Switzerland, add a copy to your residence permit.

(2) You can obtain the application package in Swiss representation of your country.

(3) Please send two sets of application documents (=1 original +1 copy) in the order listed below. The 1st set includes the original, signed documents, confidential letters, and recommendations. If applicable, the attested translations into English. Except for personal notes, the other pack contains copies of the 1st and 1st sets. There are no copies of the 2nd set.
