Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE
In the direction of the Shift Supervisor, Transit Enforcement is responsible for enforcing York Region and applicable local Municipal by-laws that govern transportation and related properties, as well as the Criminal Code of Canada, and any other applicable federal and provincial laws on or related to York Region Transit and affiliated properties, in addition to providing assistance to customers and security to every York Region Transit patrons, equipment, and property.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in the uniform and non-discriminatory implementation of applicable by-laws, which includes processing and arresting individuals who are in violation of applicable laws and regulations of the federal and provincial governments on York Region Transit and affiliated properties.
- Issues appropriate offenses notices, summonses, or notices of appearance to people who are in violation.
- Aids York Regional Police in the transport and processing of detained people and assists with the conduct of criminal investigations when needed.
- Participates in court hearings and gives an expert witness when needed.
- Offers emergency first-level assistance when needed.
- Patrols the premises, secures the site or evidence, gathers evidence from witnesses, and provides first aid or assistance when needed.
- Responds to alarms, investigate alarms, and provide assistance when required.
- Examines and resolves any issues that involve fraudulent activities and customer inquiries, concerns, and issues in conformity with the operational procedures.
- Assists in crowd control when needed.
- Participating in presentations given to the relevant stakeholders provides information and increases the public’s awareness of the enforcement and safety issues and programs for crime prevention.
- Contacts York Regional Police, other enforcement agencies, as well as various courts at different levels in relation to enforcement questions.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Successful completion of 2 (2) a year Community College program that focuses on Police Foundations or Law and Security or an approved equivalent combination of experience and education.
- A minimum of three (3) year’s law enforcement or security expertise or comparable experience working with the public as well as the enforcement process.
- Current Standard First Aid Level C and CPR certification.
- Minimum hearing and vision standards are set by the relevant body that regulates.
- The successful completion of your Skills Assessment (Aptitude Test) as well as the physical fitness required.
- Psychological screening and medical screening as well as assessment and interview all of which are defined by the Constable Selection System.
- Current Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, free of serious violations pursuant to the Highway Traffic Act.
- An acceptable Police Records Examine and Background investigation for the purpose of getting Special Constable status.

How do I qualify?

- Experience in the safe handling of contraband and weapons, to be able to handle the items discovered in the possession of the person offenders. In-depth knowledge of inmate subcultures and prisoner jargon for understanding offenders while observing and conversing with them while they are in transportation.
- The knowledge of traffic laws in Ontario Basic car maintenance, safety as well as basic safety checks on transport vehicles (e.g. lights, tires, and devices for safety) to ensure safe transport of offenders in OTP vehicles.
- Experience with computer software applications like Microsoft Office Suite and database software to retrieve and input information, create complete reports and documentation, and ensure accurate counts.
- Communication skills that allow you to interact with criminals in a non-confrontational way to encourage cooperation from them while transporting them to courts and cell spaces and follow the rules of transport and regulations.
